Our history

It’s a family affair

Celebrating 90 years

In 2025 we’re celebrating 90 years of Haulfryn. Our story began with Frank Minoprio, who fell in love with Abersoch and the beauty of the Llŷn Peninsula back in 1908 and built a house called Haulfryn – meaning ‘sunny hill’. By 1935, The Haulfryn Estate Company was born, with Frank’s wife and nine children on board. From then on, the family passion for great UK holidays just kept growing… watch our short video for a brief flash back through our history.

All about family!

Our first Managing Director

Frank’s sons, Anthony, James and Hilary, each brought something special to Haulfryn. Anthony, the architect with an eye for detail, became Chairman in 1944. James, fresh from the city, added his business know-how. And Hilary, with his love of Abersoch, became our very first Managing Director at just 33. Together, they helped shape Haulfryn through the decades.

Haulfryn History 1930s Onwards
Where it all began

The Warren Resort & Spa

Just down the road from the family holiday home in Abersoch, holidaymakers had been pitching up on the land that would be The Warren on a casual basis since the 1930s. In 1948, the very first caravan site licence was secured, and despite tight funds (even Haulfryn House was re-mortgaged!), development pushed ahead. By the 1960s, The Warren was thriving, a model park, hugely popular, and proof that Haulfryn had truly arrived.

Growth and expansion

1960s to 1980s

The '60s saw fresh ideas, new managers, and new parks across the Llŷn, Barmouth, and Anglesey. The '70s welcomed Barmouth Bay, Gimblet Rock, Crugan, and Glan Gors to the family, with a new generation of Minoprios at the helm. And the '80s was when Quinton Minoprio streamlined the business, launched exclusive Haulfryn holiday homes, and built The Warren’s outdoor pool - as Haulfryn becomes an industry leader.

A new chapter

Welcome to the '90s, a new chapter in Haulfryn's history. Where we expanded beyond Wales and into the South of England. Seven residential parks were purchased in 1990, creating Haulfryn’s Residential Parks division, followed by four more from the Gowring Group.

By the end of the decade, the ‘Quin era’ came to a close, with Quinton retiring as Chairman in 2000.

Fresh energy, bold expansion

Entering the 2000s

The new millennium brought fresh energy as Stephen and Richard Minoprio, grandsons of the founder, took on the roles of Chairman and Deputy Chairman. Together with Chief Executive Rod Tucker, they led a bold and ambitious expansion into the South West and South East.

In just 10 years, Haulfryn doubled in size all while investing in modern facilities, technology, and leisure features for guests.

Add a touch of luxe

2010s to today:

From luxury spas to waterslides and stylish new dining spaces, the 2010s saw us step things up in style. Despite the pandemic, we kept raising the bar, opening Devon Hills’ leisure complex, The Warren’s Spa and seafront restaurant Sandbar, and Finlake Falls with its flumes, gym and indulgent spa.
Today, we’re still innovating, enhancing experiences making sure every guest, resident and holiday homeowner enjoys the best.
